Safest cosmetic

New "use-by" information covering long-lasting beauty creams, suntan lotion and shampoo became compulsory in March 2005. In addition, compulsory labelling of 26 potentially allergenic substances used as perfume and aromatic ingredients in cosmetics came into force as well. "Consumers get clear information about the product they buy and use, and the EU cosmetics industry benefits from coherent rules, as the new labelling is uniformly implemented in the single market". said European Commission Vice-President Gunter Verheaugen.

Consumers generally welcome the new policy because it helps them to buy cosmetics “safely”. However, some people said that it is not safe enough. The safest cosmetic is the natural cosmetic. Laura McComiskie from Love the Planet said, "It is commonplace for cosmetic companies to advertise the fact that their products are not tested on animals and we should by now all be aware of the positive aspects of this. Moreover, the natural cosmetic companies should ensure that raw materials which have been obtained from animal sources are not used in the products. Slaughterhouse by-products such as gelatine are frequently used in the cosmetics industry, yet there are vegetable based alternatives which are just as effective. It is also important to avoid products which contain ingredients derived from the petroleum industry. Mineral oil acts as a barrier on the surface of the skin, blocking pores and suppressing normal skin functions."
