Re-fashion exhibition

In a move away from recent fashion exhibitions Sally Lai and Amechi Ihenacho, designer and fashion co-ordinator from Chinese Arts centre are interested in unearthing and revealing something of the creative process behind designer’s work as oppose to purely presenting finished garments.

With the focus on process, the exhibition’s ideas include ethereal environments created with vintage Victoriana, incorporating sound and moving image, a digital message in a bottle of inspiration, cultural references, an exhaustive definition of ‘Here and Now’, ready-made sculptures wrapped in signature fabrics and suspended patterns.

Workshops and talks

The Re-fashion exhibition opens from 6 May to 17 July 2005 at the Chinese Arts Centre Manchester.

  • 26 May, designers Julian Roberts and Sophie Cheung are leading a discussion focusing on their work and professional practice. The talk will also look at issues relating to the inspiration, commission and installation of the works.
  • 28 May, artist Nina Chua in her workshop 'Bring-along-old-clothes' day is teaching you how to transform the old clothes into something new.
  • 2 June, Paula Orrell, Lecturer in Fashion Curation at London College of Fashion, is hosting a talk detailing the history of fashion curation and the designer as curator. The talk aims to highlight wider issues surrounding the fashion industry and the relationships between fashion and contemporary visual arts.
